DO YOUR COMPUTER UPDATES!

SO Important to Install Your Computers Updates!!
Have you ever had a notice come up on your computer to update software and restart your computer?  How many times have you said to yourself,  “It’s working fine, I will do it later”?  No matter when those darn updates want to happen, it is never a good time; you will almost always be in the middle of something important.  Well the truth is, it might not be a good time then, but I can guarantee that your computer will start having issues causing you more time in the long run!
As threats emerge, software manufacturers are constantly updating their operating systems and the applications to block those threats.  You can look at it like a locksmith and a burglar.  Hackers try to find holes in the software and try to get in the back door so to speak.  Software manufacturers are trying to keep the locks secure and make sure you don’t ‘leave a window open’ for a burglar.  But in order to make sure all windows and doors are locked and secure, you need to download those updates as they become available to make sure you are getting the maximum protection for our computer.  And lets face it, programs have kinks to be worked out, and updates provide us a free and easy way to fix those bugs.

Updating your computer will:
  •         Protect you against some malware/virus
  •     Will protect you against cyber-criminal attacks
  •        Will improve your computers performance
  •        Will fix bugs
  •        Adds new features of the software
  •         Will prevent printing issues
  •        Will prevent problems with the way you are interacting with web pages

IT IS GOOD TO SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER AND RESTART IT EVERY NOW AND THEN!
It is an IT’s greatest repair secret

Spell check all sheets in a workbook at once. If a workbook contains several sheets, you probably spell check each sheet individually. However, you don't have to. If you'd like to spell check an entire workbook, first right-click on any sheet tab, and then choose Select All Sheets from the resulting shortcut menu. To spell check specific sheets, hold down the [Ctrl] key and click on the appropriate sheet tabs, or hold down the [Shift] key to select a block of adjacent worksheets. After you've made your selection, simply press [F7] to launch the spell checker.

Eliminate single words at the bottom of the page.  Do you have a single word left at the bottom of a page or only one word on the following page?  These are called orphans and widows, respectively.  Quick fix:  right click on any part of the paragraph and select Paragraph.  On the “Line and Page Breaks,” tab check to see that Widow/Orphan control is checked.  If you’re trying to keep a title with its paragraph or a diagram with its referring paragraph, try checking Keep with next and/or Keep lines together to solve the problem.

OFFICE 2007-2010 takes some getting used to even with all of the great new features.  The most common frustration is “Where did they put my icons?!”  The ribbon is basically organized “most commonly used” to “least commonly used”, left to right.  However, it may still take you some time to locate a button or icon.  As soon as you do, if it is one you use frequently, right-click on it and choose Add to Quick Access Toolbar.  It is now on the small toolbar in the far upper-left corner of the screen.

Q     I have an iPad that was purchased by the district last year.  Can you tell me what the process is to get it registered?
A    We need all district purchased iPads,  iPods, or any other device that may have the need to purchase apps, be registered with the technology department.  The procedure for a “pre-existing” device is a little different that one that is brand new.  Both procedures are extremely easy!  For those devices that are already in the district, the technology department needs to gather information so that a lot of the work can be done before we actually have to have the device in house,  Use the following link to submit your information: Apple Device Registration Once that form is complete, Angela will call to set up a time with you to finish the registration process.  For new devices, all purchases are asked to go through the manufacturer and processed through our shipping department. All of the registering process will be completed by the time the device gets to you. So IF you have a device that hasn’t been registered, please use the link above or call Angela directly.  It is a painless process, I promise!

Clicking and dragging a formula down a column is easy!  This process can be tedious if you have hundreds or even thousands of rows of data.  Whether it is 10 rows or 10,000 rows, if there is data on the left or right of a formula you are about to copy, just double click the auto fill handle.  The way you know you are on the AutoFill handle is that your cursor changes from a white plus to a black plus.  The formula will stop copying where your data stops.  You can also copy cells contents by just clicking (with the black plus) and dragging down to a selected cell, if there is no data in the neighboring cells.
Keep repeating the same information over and over?  Do you always close with the same few lines in your letters or often insert similar requests for information?  Create your own Quick Part and repeat your actions with a couple of clicks.  Type in your verbiage and select it.  On the insert tab, in the text group, click Quick Parts.  Select the last option, Save Selection to Quick Part Gallery.  To use it again, simply click the same button.  Your own Quick Parts should show up at the top of the drop-down menu.  Hint:  This works in Outlook too!
Follow up with Outlook. Set a follow-up flag BEFORE you send an email by using the message tab, which appears in place of the Home tab when composing email. Click on the drop down button of the Follow Up tab. Select one of the preset follow-up times or a custom date.  You can even set a reminder.  It will then show up as a task on your To-Do Bar.  You will get a pop up reminder when it is time to send a follow-up.
